The winners of the 2019 Vans Custom Culture Contest were Volcano Vista High School from Albuquerque, New Mexico. The team of high school artists, supervised by their art teacher, Jen Adkins, crafted five unique Vans shoes that celebrated their hometown culture and ultimately won them the grand prize of $75,000.
The four runner-ups were also awarded prizes of $25,000. They were: San Marcos High School from San Marcos, Texas, Hinsdale Central High School from Hinsdale, Illinois, East Forsyth High School from Kernersville, North Carolina, and Southridge High School from Beaverton, Oregon.
Each year, the Vans Custom Culture contest enables high school art students to explore, express and demonstrate their creativity by creating customized pairs of shoes which reflect their city and culture.
This year, more than 4,000 high schools participated in the program.
The teams were judged on their ability to tell a story through the design of their shoes, combine different elements to create a cohesive design, use middle and foreground components to express a greater meaning, represent their local culture and finally push the boundaries of customization.
