Why did Marquette get rid of football?

Marquette University made the difficult decision to discontinue its football team in December 1960 as part of a larger effort to focus on fewer, higher-quality varsity sports. This decision was made to strengthen Marquette’s overall athletic program and to better align the athletics program with the mission and goals of the university.

At the time, the university was undergoing a period of transition. It had recently moved from downtown to its scenic current-day location and was working hard to improve the quality of its academic offerings.

It was believed that supporting a football program took away resources from the many other areas of the university that needed attention, including athletics, scholarships, and student services.

Additionally, the number of students enrolled at the university had declined significantly since its football program began in 1893. Football attendance was waning, and it was no longer deemed a financially viable option for the university.

Thus, the university decided to channel its resources into offering higher quality programs in fewer sports, and football was discontinued.

Marquette’s Board of Trustees determined that their athletics program needed to focus “upon team sports that make the maximum use of available personnel and attract the highest quality of student-athlete and the largest likely audience.

” As a result, they reasoned that it was unacceptable to staff a football team and other men’s varsity teams with sub-standard personnel, insufficient funding, and minimal fan interest.

In the end, Marquette made a difficult but necessary move in discontinuing its football team. This was part of the university’s transition to focus on its primary mission as an institution of higher learning and to insure that the quality of its athletics program was in line with its academic focus.
