The Western Kentucky University (WKU) swim team has been inactive since 2018 when the WKU Board of Regents voted to cut all funding to the program as part of a two-year budget reduction plan due to state cuts in state funding.
This decision was met with strong opposition from the WKU Swim & Dive alumni and the WKU student body, but ultimately the decision was never overturned.
Since then, the WKU Swim & Dive alumni have been working to raise funds to bring the program back to life, but their efforts have so far been unsuccessful. Despite their financial shortfalls, the team still holds an annual swim meet each fall, which gives swimmers from the region a chance to compete in a collegiate setting.
In the meantime, WKU offers aquatics classes for students, such as swimming technique, water safety and lifeguard certification. These classes have been popular among WKU students and faculty alike, providing a safe and exciting way to stay in shape and learn important life skills.
