On Sunday, December 20th, 2020, a vacant apartment building in the East Price Hill section of Cincinnati, Ohio collapsed. The building, located on the corner of Warsaw Avenue and Herman Street, was considered to be a total loss after sustaining severe structural damage.
Due to the severity of the collapse, a portion of the road was closed for an extended period of time to allow for the cleanup and investigation. Fortunately, no injuries were reported as a result of the collapse.
Local news sources suggest that the collapse was likely due to a complete lack of maintenance over the years and investigators were examining the structure to determine the exact cause. After the collapse, the owner of the building was issued a notice of non-compliance by the Cincinnati Department of Buildings and Inspections for failure to maintain the building and for causing an environmental public health nuisance.
Additionally, the City of Cincinnati issued a Vacant Property Complaint requiring the owner to do all necessary repairs and maintenance in order to make the property secure.
Why did the Miami building fall?
The collapse of the building in Miami was caused by an inattention to structural integrity, largely because of its construction’s advanced age. The exact cause of the collapse is still unknown, but a majority of the investigation points to a “structural failure due to old age, inadequate maintenance and a lack of structural engineering modifications”.
The builders and developers had reportedly ignored recommendations from the city and from engineers to improve the building’s structure during construction and over the building’s lifetime. Many of the building’s structural features were outdated, not up to standards and poorly maintained.
To further compound matters, structural engineers observed that the building’s original design had numerous weak points, leading to potential failure over time. In addition, the building had been subject to repairs and alterations that may or may not have been properly implemented.
Put together, these factors caused a progressive collapse of the building, with the roof and several stories plunging to the street below. The unfortunate incident unfortunately caused the loss of seven lives and untold economic losses.
Consequently, the tragedy brought to light the fact that antiquated buildings—especially those in a tropical climate like Miami—should be inspected and maintained regularly to ensure safety.
What happened to the building that fell in Miami?
In 2020, the iconic Miami Tower fell in Downtown Miami after undergoing 8 weeks of preparations for its demolition. One Miami Tower stands at 587 feet tall and was the tallest building in Miami before its being demolished in April.
The demolition was part of a $2 billion development project for the city of Miami.
The plan was to bring down the building with explosives, but in the end, the demolition crew opted to use more manual practices to take the building down. According to reports, over two thousand workers were hired to take down the building with a combination of drills, saws, and other handheld tools.
The workers took the building down piece-by-piece, and the entire process took almost six weeks.
While the building’s rubble has already been cleared away, the city has plans to replace the building with a new park and a $1. 1 million grant program. The new park is set to be completed in late 2022 and will feature a remembrance garden, celebration garden, healing garden, and a habitat garden, to honor the people and cultures of Miami’s past.
The city of Miami is planning to remember the iconic Miami Tower not just through its new park, but also through a number of public art pieces celebrating the building’s legacy. The art pieces include a large steel sculpture set to be completed in April 2021, as well as street murals, custom light fixtures, and 23 glass windows throughout downtown that pay tribute to the building.

Why did the Champlain Towers collapse?
The collapse of the Champlain Towers in St. John’s Newfoundland in 1992 was an event that left an indelible mark on the minds of many that were witness to the horrific event. The cause of the collapse, however, remains contentious.
A widely accepted explanation of the collapse is that water had infiltrated the building over its 27-year life-span, and had saturated the strengthening steel bars within its foundations. When the weight of its concrete walls and floors (combined with the snow and ice that had built up on its roof during a recent winter) overloaded the weakening steel, the building could not support the increased load and catastrophically failed.
The water infiltration had likely been accelerated by a number of factors. These included improper maintenance of the building, the use of low-grade concrete that lacked phosphoric acid to protect it from sea water, as well as damage done by the removal of its asbestos insulation several months prior to its collapse.
More severe criticism points at the original structural design of the building itself, with some noting that its incredibly thin walls were nowhere near thick enough to bear its exterior load in the first place.
To this point, the original engineer responsible for the design never faced any repercussions for their mistake.
Ultimately, the collapse of the Champlain Towers likely involved the culmination of many factors, some of them related to poor building maintenance, and some of which were entwined with the original construction of the structure and the materials used in its making.
Such was the complexity of the disaster that to this day, the cause of the collapse remains something of a mystery.
Did they recover all the bodies from the Miami building collapse?
No, unfortunately not all the bodies were recovered from the Miami building collapse. The collapse occurred at noon on Thursday, July 23, 2020, when the side wall of a parking garage under construction at Miami Dade College collapsed.
The incident left six workers dead and ten others injured.
The Miami-Dade Fire Rescue and the Urban Search and Rescue (USAR) teams were called to the scene and immediately began working to rescue the workers trapped under the debris. Rescue crews needed to work carefully as the debris, which included large concrete slabs, was unstable.
Unfortunately, due to the amount of debris, some of the victims were buried too deep for crews to reach safely. As a result, only 5 of the victims were recovered, while the remaining victim was declared dead at the scene.
The USAR team worked around the clock throughout the weekend to search for and remove the remaining body, but all efforts were unsuccessful. After days of searching, the Miami-Dade Fire Rescue declared that all efforts had been exhausted and the last victim was declared missing, presumed dead.

Who built the Surfside condo that collapsed?
The Surfside condo that collapsed was built in the 1950s by a Miami-Dade County contractor who has since gone out of business. The contractor is not known, though records indicate that their work was approved by a Miami-Dade County building inspector at the time.
After the collapse occurred, engineers were brought in to determine if the structure had been built up to code, but it was determined that the building had been constructed with substandard materials that weren’t strong enough to withstand normal wear and tear.
Although there was a lack of oversight due to the contractor going out of business, that doesn’t excuse the fact that the collapse could have been prevented had it been built and inspected properly.
How many high rise buildings have collapsed?
It is very difficult to ascertain precisely how many high rise buildings have collapsed across the world since there is no comprehensive record available. That being said, there have been numerous instances of high-rise buildings buckling and crashing to the ground.
High-rises have been prone to collapses due to negligent design and construction, natural disasters, and fire. Examples of collapses include the 1979 collapse of the Sampoong Department Store in South Korea, which killed 502 people and injured 937, the 1993 collapse of the Sultan Tepe Plaza in Istanbul, which killed 81 people and injured another 88, and the 2017 collapse of a residential tower in Tamaulipas, Mexico, killing one person and injuring three others.

In conclusion, it is impossible to determine exactly how many high-rise buildings have collapsed, but the collapses of many high-rises due to natural disaster, fire, or structural faults have made it clear that preventing disaster in proper construction processes is essential.
What keeps skyscrapers from falling over?
Skyscrapers have several design features that help them withstand the forces of nature and keep them upright. First, the foundation of a skyscraper is constructed using reinforced concrete and steel, to create a rigid base that can support the building’s weight.
Once the foundations are laid, the structure is designed to be tall and slender, with a central core and columns supporting the structure, which helps spread the weight throughout the structure. Additionally, many skyscrapers feature a steel frame, which helps them withstand horizontal winds.
Finally, structural engineers also incorporate multiple layers of redundancies into the design of a skyscraper, allowing it to remain stable despite the varying temperatures and wind speeds that it might endure.
Combined, these design features allow skyscrapers to remain upright and flexible no matter the weather or other physical factors.
Will skyscrapers eventually fall?
No, skyscrapers will not eventually fall, though some may crumble due to natural disasters and accidents. Human engineering has come a long way when it comes to the construction of skyscrapers, and today’s structures are designed to last for decades and withstand various forms of damage.
The building materials used for skyscrapers are chosen for their strength and resilience, with components such as steel and reinforced concrete providing both durability and flexibility. Additionally, modern skyscrapers are designed with an emphasis on safety, often including fire sprinklers, emergency exits, and other safety features.
As a result, skyscrapers are usually able to withstand extreme weather conditions and other natural disasters.
It should be noted, however, that while modern skyscrapers may not eventually fall, they may still require regular maintenance and upkeep in order to remain safe and structurally sound. Regular inspections and repairs are necessary to ensure that any damage due to time or potential problems is detected and fixed promptly.
As long as responsible owners, engineers, and maintenance crews prioritize safety and adhere to best practices, then skyscrapers should remain standing for decades to come.
