Yes, an animal has escaped from the Louisville Zoo. In 2018, a 15-year-old Sulawesi macaque named Mia escaped from her enclosure in the Primate Forest section. Mia managed to squeeze through the bars of her enclosure and climb quickly through the netted top.
She then used a tarp to break onto a nearby roof and hop across rooftops in the zoo until she was pushed off one and into a bush. From there, she presumably jumped onto a low wall surrounding the zoo and climbed over it to make her escape.
Zoo personnel put out a call on social media to alert people of her escape, but it wasn’t long before Mia was sighted roaming nearby streets. After a few hours, a local animal rescuer was able to lure her back in with apples and the Louisville Zoo was able to safely recapture the cheerful primate.
She appeared healthy and only slightly worse for wear. Mia has since been moved to a larger enclosure with sturdier bars and higher netting to help ensure she won’t be able to escape again.
